ELEM: Books like Lily's Purple Plastic Purse

Hello!  Our principal gives each teacher a book at the beginning of the =
school year. 2004-2005 will be his last year, and he would love to give =
them Kevin Henke's "Lily's Purple Plastic Purse". Unfortunately, it is =
only available in hardback, and the cost would be prohibitive.  Can =
anyone suggest any books with a similar theme to this one?  Our =
principal loves reading and children and is a real class act, if that =
helps. =20

I'll post a list of suggestions, if anyone has any.
