Thanks to all that responded to my request for explorer fiction.   Here is a list 
of the titles recommended.

1.  Voyage of the Half Moon by West  (only 55 pages, RL 4.9)
A fictionalized account of Henry Hudson's third attempt to find the Northwest 
Passage, sailing up what will come to be known as the Hudson River,
accompanied by his twelve-year-old son.

2.  The Journal of Augustus Pelletier the Lewis & Clark Expedition
Author:  Lasky, Kathryn
Publisher:  New York Scholastic, Inc.   (Dear America Series)
Publication Date:  2000
In this fictional journal, a half-French, half-Omaha Indian runaway shadows the 
Lewis and Clark expedition before making his presence known and becoming
a valued member of the crew. Gus's journal is readable but basically remains a 
by-the-numbers recitation of real-life events. A historical note and
section of archival images provide additional information on Lewis and Clark's 
journey

3.  Captain's Dog by Roland Smith       Publisher Gulliver Books, 2000, c1999. 
Description 287 p. : map ; 18 cm.
Captain Meriwether Lewis's dog Seaman describes his experiences as he accompanies 
his master on the Lewis and Clark Expedition to explore the uncharted
western wilderness.

Seaman, a Newfoundland, proves his value as a hunter, navigator, and protector 
while serving with the Corps of Discovery when it explores the West under
the leadership of Lewis and Clark.

5.  Surviving Jamestown : the adventures of young Sam Collier / Gail Langer 
Karwoski ; illustrated by Paul Casale.

SUMMARY Sam Collier, a twelve-year-old, serves as page to John Smith during
the relentless hardship experienced by the founders at the first permanent
English settlement in the New World.

6.  Verne, Jules.  Journey to the center of the earth.  New York :
                Baronet Books, [19?].  Professor Hardwigg and friends
                journey down a volcano toward the center of the earth. The
                explorers encounter storms, pre-historic animals and
                cavemen. Will they reach the center of the earth?.

7.  FIC YOL    PICTURE BOOK
           Yolen, Jane.  Encounter.  1st ed.  San Diego : Harcourt Brace
                Jovanovich, c1992.  A Taino Indian boy on the island of San
                Salvador recounts the landing of Columbus and his men in
               1492.

7.  Streams to the River, River to the Sea by Scott O'Dell             (RL YA)
A young Indian woman, accompanied by her infant and cruel husband, experiences joy 
and heartbreak when she joins the Lewis and Clark Expedition seeking a
way to the Pacific.

11.  The King's fifth / Scott O'Dell
A tale of seven adventurers who left the summer camp of Coronado's army and struck 
out into the great Southwest to find the golden cities of Cibola.
12.  Stowaway by Karen Hesse
 Karen Hesse's story is based on actual Endeavour stowaway Nicholas Young. Hesse's 
information comes from the diaries of Captain Cook and shipboard
naturalist Joseph Banks.
13.  Morning Girl by Michael Dorris
and 14/15.
William Durbin's stories about the fur trade set in Minnesota.  Walking up a 
Mountain...Taylor about the Corps of Engineers and Lewis and Clark.
