By not specifically Christian oriented, do you mean not about Christmas at all or just not so much emphasizing the religious angle?--say, for example, would a theoretical book about shopping at Macy's and the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center be okay? I don't understand this type of complaint myself. There has been a lot of emphasis with having students, especially in 'mainstream' schools read books, often fiction books, about people who just happen to be Jewish, Islamic, Buddhist, African, Arabian, Serbian, etc., and understand their traditions, and how they go about their celebrations and cultural activities, no problem, but a non-Christian shouldn't have to read a quality story which happens to be about Christian religious and cultural activities? But I digress; back to the original question of "How 'Non-Christian' were they looking for?" This year they are being told to find an alternative book. They ne= ed something that would be suitable for the holidays, though not specificall= y Christian-oriented, fairly short and at a 5 or 6 reading level. I have checked the archives to no avail. Please send any suggestions you may hav= e. Thanks! =20 Angie Johnson Library Media Specialist Lakeshore Middle School 1459 W.
