Thanks to all that responded. Now I just need to check out all the
local possibilities and then approach my principal with my findings. A
HIT was requested so here are responses I received. It is lengthy.
----------------
Through the generosity of an alum and his wife, I was given an HP
Office Jet d145. It is an 'all in one' and I really like it!

The scanner part frustrates me but then that is usually on one of
those
'technologically challenged' days that we all have! <g>

It has one feature that is really good for printing things for
students
--and that is a 'fast print cycle'.....faster printing and uses less
toner.

The cartridges aren't very big and our generous donors gave us 12 of
each...so we are set for a while.

It was purchased at Costco.
------------------
I purchased a small copier from Office Depot a few years ago. It
might
not work for your situation, but I got a Canon Personal Copier for
about
$200. Since I'm in an elementary school I'm the only one using the
copier but I was tired of having to walk to the office every time I
needed a copy of a packing slip or a purchase order so it works great
for me. I anticipated that as soon as the teachers found out that I
had
a copier they would want me to make copies for them (teachers aren't
allowed to make their own copies here) so I purposely bought the
slowest
copier I could find. It only makes a maximum of 9 copies at a time
and
only 4 copies per minute. Its great fun watching the teachers faces
fall when the realize that they can't realistically slip into my
office
and copy worksheets for their class. (I know, I have a slight mean
streak in me sometimes.) I like the copier so well I purchased one
for
our house a few months ago.
-----------------------
Yes, It's a viable option. Rather than go to a discount store like
Sam's or WalMart, though, I'd go to a local office supply store that
also offers service and toner supplies. It may cost you a little more
at first, but every copier is going to need service at some point.

My school has bought at least 4 small desktop copiers in the last
couple of years for use in small volume areas (like my library). We got
two from the local Canon dealer and two re-furbished- slightly heftier
models- from our local AB Dick rep. All are doing a good job for us. I
think the most expensive one was still around $600. The Canon PC940 in
my library was "purchased" through a local Apples For Students program
(we got it free for turning in $X in grocery receipts). I would
actually recommend that you try for a slightly higher model even though
this one is doing fine for me so far.

I wouldn't recommend the combination machines because if one function
goes down it sometimes takes the other functions down also. I
one-function machine is usually easier to maintain. However, if you
really need those extra features and that if your best option, go for
it.
----------------------------------
All we have in our library is an HP machine that scans, prints and
copy's.
It has worked great and we got it at Office Depot. Ours is older so
I'm
sure there is an updated model. It's HP G55. It seems like it was
 $300-$400.

** However, I would highly recommend getting one from DELL. I got one
for
my home - it does all the same stuff and prints pictures from digital
cameras, and it was a special for $89.00!!! They are always having
 specials.
--------------------------
I have a small copier in the library that I bought used from the
company that provides copiers for our school district. I paid @ 500
for it. It is a pretty plain copier, it will enlarge & shrink, but
that's about it. It works fine for what we need. I don't make a lot
of
copies....I use the printer whenever possible (handouts for students,
booklists, etc.). I have had this copier for 5 years and had the
repair man in once for some minor adjustment (it is a Minolta). My
biggest problem is when all the other copiers are down and teachers
need to use it for their copies--it isn't meant to be used for high
 volume!
---------------------------
Have you thought of calling local copy machine companies? We have an
arrangement where an older model copier was "placed" in our library
without a lease or any paperwork. The company collects .10/copy (there
is a counter inside). We collect .10 from students or teachers who want
to copy personal things, but we often make "free" copies or library
stuff.
We use paper from school and the company services the copier and
provides toner anytime we call.
The machine costs me nothing as far as maintenance and I estimate I pay
out about $60/year from my budget for copies. Our school has 700 high
schoolers. They make a lot of personal copies, so the company earns
about $30/month.
------------------------
I think that sounds like a great solution. We are leasing a new
machine
and now I am wishing that we did not sign a 5 year contract. Monthly
leasing is $121.00 and I don't do that much copying until the spring.
We
could have gone with a much smaller machine for student copying and
we
have 1200 students.
----------------------------
Canon PC941 cost about $299.00
I have one at home and our small public library has one. It was not
exactly easy to find, but our librarian was using this model at another
job and
recommended it. I picked mine up for a much reduced cost at a Sam's
 clearance shelf.

I wonder about the Canon PC150 that costs about 150.00.

Another system would be to use a scanner.
------------------------
At home I have an HP PSC 2110, which is a printer, scanner, and
copier.
I have had it for almost two years and I love it! It does all of
those
functions well, but does go through ink pretty quickly. That is the
bad
thing about this type of machine, it will be rather expensive to keep
buying ink. If you are sure the school won't get you a regular
copier,
then the one I have is a good one to consider.
