Oh my goodness I have to respectfully disagree. I was in elementary for 6 years and I can't imagine restricting access or number of books. If there is ever a time to have a positive impact on children's interest in books it is when they are young and impressionable. I asked the kids "how many books can you carry?" (not original, it came from David Loertscher) and let them take what they wanted. If a 5 year old wanted the giant Goepfert storybook she had my blessing, though of course it had an impact on the above question! It's all about getting books into kids' hands, not about getting them back onto the shelves. Not freedom to read as in no censorship, but freedom as in "read whatever and as many as you want."
