I couldn't agree more. Each of us is in a different situation. Some have 2
or more librarians plus a full time aide in a building, others are split
between 2 or even 3 buildings and working on a fixed schedule with minimal
assistance. Some of us have shelves filled with great books (as I do) and
others have shelves that always seem empty even with supplemental book
funds. Some work in schools in great communities where everyone takes out
and returns tons of books each week (Lake Woebegone?) and other in schools
where transient populations and lack of interest result in huge yearly book
losses.
I've worked in schools in both extremes and I can honestly say that there's
no one-size-fits-all rule for book selection. Too often we are so
entrenched in our own school setting that we fail to understand that in a
group of approximately 14,000 librarians around the world, there are
differences in schools and their communities. So let's just accept the fact
that most librarians do their best to accommodate their students and leave
it at that. Let's stop the flames!
