Our middle school is looking at alternative scheduling ideas for
students who are failing enough classes to be in danger of grade
retention. I have been asked to contact my library colleagues for
information about what programs other middle schools have put in
place.

One program that we have implemented in the past was to remove a
student from an elective class and place them in a second hour of the
core class they were failing. The elective teachers, understandably,
wanted this plan abolished.

We are considering alternate school hours -- the student would report at
9 am and stay until 5 pm. Making the hours inconvenient for a
middle-schoolers social life might be a wake-up call.

If you have ideas that have worked in your district, would you please take
a minute and share them with me? Thanks much!
