Some of you asked for a HIT, so here is what I have so far.
My understanding is that most of the 'public' records were destroyed way
in the past...the best records available are from the Catholic parishes.
I've not tried very hard to find things in Ireland - I'm still tracking
down who came over and when - but here are a few sites I've unearthed:

Ireland genealogy is set up by counties. Some of them are besieged by
letters from the United States. You can call and get a good indication
of the status of the records you are interested in.
It would help if you know what county the relatives are from.

By this time, I'm sure that you've had many responses, but there is a
GenWeb site for many Ireland counties http://www.irelandgenweb.com/ ,
and there is a subscription service called www.otherdays.com that
offers some of its data for free.
