Personally, I prefer the back cover upper right near the spine.  I find
the barcode on the front cover to be distracting & it often covers a
portion of the title of the book.  Taking inventory is similar to what
you describe (& easier, if you ar left handed!).

For inventory purposes, I suggest the front cover, upper left hand
corner.
If not, you will have to pull each book off the shelf and open it to
scan it
into the system rather than just sliding the upper left hand corner out
to
expose the barcode.

I'm getting ready to bar code our collection for the first time and I'm
trying to decide where to place the bar code label on each book. I'm
