Good morning, I have received many responses asking for a HIT. This was tougher than it seems, most states or even districts do not have recommended classroom reading lists for each grade level. One of our English teachers is trying to get the middle and high schools together...we often have kids who have read a book 2 or 3 times by the time they graduate..all at different grade levels. Below is the list of responses I received. It really seems to be up to each individual English department of each individual school...or each individual teacher. While autonomy is wonderful, it seems students would be better served if specific teachers could pick from a specific "grade level" list, so kids could at least be introduced to many different classroom novels or lit books. thanks to those who took the time to reply. My teacher is still thrilled w/ the input. This list has always been more than helpful every time and it makes us all look so good to our teachers! Here is a modified list of what is read at some grades: 12------A Tale of Two Cities 11------Scarlet Letter 10------The Chosen 11------Great Expectations Our AP classes and preAP classes read many more. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you visit our English department's web page most of the teachers have a list of their required reading during the school year. Hope this is helpful. http://creightonprep.creighton.edu/academics/english.html ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I have attached our parallel required reading list. I hope this helps. -------------------------------------------------------------------- All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Ginnie: I do not know of one place to find all the lists you want, but I can tell you that Arthur Applebee did a survey of required HS reading and published the results. You might do an ERIC search for that document. It is rather dated, and one of my doctoral students is replicating that research now. However, it did list the major works being used nationwide. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- It's harder than I thought. I couldn't find my own school system's required reading list. But here are a few. The last, Montgomery County, is considered one of the best school systems in the country. Believe it or not, I have also been trying to find the same information (and am also looking only for required titles that are taught in classes, and not recommended or summer reading lists). I have been unable to locate a comprehensive list anywhere on the web. I have looked at state education sites, but haven't seen any lists thus far even for states (such as the Illinois Department of Education site). What I have been doing is going to web sites of individual high schools and checking to see if they have web sites for any of their classes. Then, I check and see if the syllabus for any of the English classes is available on the web, and I check to see what books they teach. This is of course extremely time consuming. Below are some of the books that I've come across and the state that they are taught in. I'd love to see what responses you have received!!!
