I posted a few days ago looking for "cute" names for having the library
open after school and also for any advice/tips. Thanks so much to all of
the respondents - they were a great help! I have shared the responses
with my principal and am waiting for her to decide but I think we'll be
going with After Hours @ Your Library (or something similar) in keeping
with the ALA theme. I also plan to stress and enforce that students must
be accompanied by a parent in order to use the library after school so as
not to become a babysitting service. Below, I have pasted the responses
that I received:

We keep our library open until 5:00 for our afterschool program. The
middle
school students in the program are there from 4-5 to do their homework.
Other students and parents maybe in the library until 4:00 or later if the
students are working on a group project if there is a parent supervising.
The problem we have is there are parents that use the extra 20-30 minutes
as a babysitting service. Their children are always in the library until
4:00 and frequently later. We are then responsible- what if they walk out
to get a drink, go to the bathroom etc. You and your principal will have
to
take a strong stand that when the library closes the students are locked
out
and you are not responsible for them.

We love having the library open and giving students that extra time to
browse or check out a book. I often tell students to come in after school
when I have more time to help them- but there are always those people who
will abuse a good thing!

Ours isn't alliterative - but makes use of the ALA "@the library" theme
- After hours @ the library

How about LIO..Library is Open...you could have LIO
the Lion be your mascot :)

I think that is a great idea. I 'd like to try it to, but my library is
used for many meetings after school. Perhaps they would have to move!
How about Wonderful Wednesdays? Doesn't say anything abotu library or
reading... but it would help people remember what day it is!

Sorry, I don't have a cute name for being open after school, but do have a
warning:
make sure the parents are with the children.
For 5 years now I have been open after school at first for an hour and now
just a 1/2 with a parent.
Parents would come in and stay and stay and stay.
Some kids would come in and say the parents were coming to pick them up
later (i.e. free babysitting).
It is a wonderful thing to do, but be clear from the beginning. I am also
open before school and during lunch and love it!

You could go obvious...The Young Readers (I love a play on
names!)...Tuesdays With Brenda ...might go over their heads...Camp
Read-a-lot...
I am sure you got lots of great ideas. Let us know what you decide on.

Our School Library in our High School Library (here in CT) is already open
a little over an hour after school. Our elementaries are open about half
an hour after students. We have no name for the time.
In Iowa and South Dakota, we were open for 20 minutes to half an
hour after the end of the school year, again, not called anything special.

Thanks again for your help!
