There is a wonderful resource called Collaboratory that is a project of Northwestern University. The web site is <http://www.collaboratory.nunet.net> where you can find information about collaboratory. It is designed for teachers of all subjects to foster collaboration. Teachers and students each need an account which opens the portal. Once you are a member, teachers can search online for projects to join or copy with your students. You can also use the Collaboratory to create online projects of your own. For each project, you create activities that are described online for the students (accessible from any Internet connected computer at home, school, public library, etc.) to which they respond, either online or in some other medium. Work can be posted for teacher comments only, for teacher and peer comments, and eventually, for public viewing if desired. You can create pages of links and information in the Cybrary, upload items to the media repository, create online book discussions, a Nexus community that works together on a project, whether the community members are from one class, one school, or from widely scattered areas. Online access can be given to community experts to advise or mentor students, and there is a survey maker, Collaboratory e-mail and chat capabilities (limited to collaboratory members, and well monitored), and an electronic portfolio area. Posting to the web is made easier by using established templates, or you can design your own. All of the information posted is hosted by the Collaboratory on Northwestern University servers. Currently, it is paid for by the Illinois State Board of Ed, and corporate sponsors, but it is available for use by teachers from other states and countries as well, and there is presently, no charge to join or participate. My school has just begun to use the Collaboratory, so I am not yet an expert on all of these activities, but it is a wonderful resource. I would welcome any questions that you might have. If I don't know the answers, I will refer you to someone who will. I would recommend anyone looking for ways to enhance online collaboration to apply for an account (takes only a short while to be approved) and then explore.
