I only see gr. 5 regularly, and I do ask them to jot down their favorite author(s) and what kinds of books they like to read, along with a little about their family, hobbies, and anything else they want to share. It's all optional. I like to record some of that in my grade book (I don't give grades, but I take attendance in it) and do refer to it from time to time. Last Feb. I had my asst. cut out a bazillion hearts on the Ellison and had kids and faculty all write in one or more titles of books they LOVE. That was fun for all, and we put them up not only in the library but around the school as well. Everyone who walked into the library could post a heart. It was interesting to note that their favorites did not coincide very well with what they told me in the beginning of the year. I think that's a good thing! You might consider doing something similar with fall leaves (if you can get them easily) for a "what great books we read over the summer" bulletin board. Have fun! Maureen S.
