If we're going to wax technical, different readers with different mental wiring are going to be using different parts of the brain for each and/or both tasks. There's definitely a fairly wide range in the 'normal' (undiagnosed with specific learning disabilities or vision problems) population as far as how much we 'hear' and 'visualize' as we process text, whether print or audio. Or the 'Gorman concept' with the whole book being the only way to read. But then, I've had a few people, interrupting while in the middle of Dickens on a PDA, ask IF I were reading, not WHAT..... Obviously there are different skills being used while reading v. listening, but in either case the ideas are being processed, stored, compiled and compared with what has already been processed. I wonder if there has been a studies on retention (type and quantity) caused by differences in input. Anecdotally, I know I can booktalk a book I've listened to as well as any I've read and generally the audio was in a car, while driving.
