I am not sure. Most of the adults at my school loved "Kitten" and the children
liked the other 3 books better. My vote was kinda with the kids. Some of the
classes wanted to talk about why "Kitten" won and others didn't. One thing I
pointed out was that an author's first book usually does not get a gold (Some kids
really liked The Red Book--and we had talked about how most of us liked Watsons Go
to Birmingham better than Bud Not Buddy) The other thing brought up was that
"Kitten" was so different from his other books. It reminded some kids of Millions
of Cats and those other old-timey books with black and white illustrations that are
still around.
Another thought was that the committee really wanted to give Henkes a gold as a
tribute to all his work.
One more thing some adults wished at school was that the committee would publish a
list of their finalists--top 10 or 20 or whatever. Every year when the medals are
given, everyone sees one or more great books they had missed. We wish we could know
what book was #5, 6 etc.
