Last week I posted a query to both LM_NET and EDTECH, requesting
creative lesson ideas and general tips for using MS Office and Paint for
teachers and students. I am preparing for an annual presentation on this
topic at TCEA (Texas Computer Educators Association), Feb. 7-10. I got
great responses and thank everyone who shared very much. At my web site
I do have information and links from previous presentations on subject,
and will post another set of pages before the conference. Here is the site:

And here are the most recent responses. Again, thanks so much! --Mary Ann

<>This may have already been used, but I try to include at least one
Word lesson on the drawing toolbar every year and teach the kids (grades
3 and up) how to add a callout, format it, get a picture from clipart,
and create their own comic strips. Of course, they have to base it on a
book. This year I used Parker Picks by Deborah Levine (in conjunction
with a unit on manners and personal hygiene.) It was a lot of fun to
see their end results.

I teach technology to 1st - 5th grade and am not sure what grade level
projects you are requesting. I live in Houston and NASA is nearby. I
tell my 4th grade students that the are going to be part of the next
crew going to Mars. Every manned space flight has had a patch created
for the crew. It is their job to design a patch for their crew.

Requirements:
only use MS Word drawing tools - no clip art - word art only for the
word NASA and crew member names every part of the design has to fit
inside the patch (if it were to be cut out it could be sewn on) they are
to use their name and at least one other name of a real astronaut

I then show the children how to use basic shapes, squiggle line, how to
group, and rotate objects, how to color the shapes.

I then give a due date, print and post on the bulletin board. Most
people that see the patches are amazed that only MS word drawing tools
were used.

For 5th grade I use the drawing tools to teach perspectives and shapes
the same time the art teachers are teaching drawing perspective in art
class.

We also use the draw tools to learn to group objects to help solve a
logic puzzle.

I would love to learn more on how teachers are using word.

<>To teach students about grouping objects, I had them insert a picture
and then "ungroup" it. Most of the clipart is made up of several
groups. Once the picture is completely ungrouped, I asked them to put
them back together to make a new picture and then group it. The "screen
bean" clipart is particularly good for this.

Two things that I like to do with MS Office:<>
(1) I like to use it as a desktop publishing system. It is fairly easy
to make brochures and newsletters with the drawing tools in MS Word.
See:<>

(2) I like to use interactive features of PowerPoint to do a variety of
things like make quizzes. You can download any of the many examples at
my site:<>

Please see the site below. She has a neat poster project that I am going to use
with my 5th graders. She shared this with a teacher listserv I belong to. Perhaps
she'll let you use it.
