In the early 90s when my daughters were in high school (not in the district where I work) , all college track freshman had to take a one semester course through the Business department in which they learned how to use word processing skills and how to use the Media Center books and databases. Then they were assigned a paper to create using these resources. The result was that they learned how to use the Media Center effectively. This was before the Internet became popular and Internet access was not available in their school. I don't know if this is still a required course. However my daughters were always amazed when they got to college to find friends and roommates who had little or no knowledge of databases and how to use the college library. It does seem like a no-brainer to teach high school kids Information literacy in addition to data processing skills but many high schools don't.
