Perhaps we are making in-roads: Kudos to the staff at Jefferson High
School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. I can only believe that this idea was
germinated several years ago when Becky Johnson, the school's new
library media specialist began promoting a day of reading during teen
read week.

Break Out the Books!

1/6/2005

Each Wednesday morning, everyone at Jefferson High School spends a
little time reading - individually. Students and staff alike step
away from their regular routines to participate in "Silent Sustained
Reading," an opportunity to enjoy a good book while working toward a
school improvement goal.

"Each week we take the first 15 minutes of second period to just
read," explained Chuck McDonnnell, Jefferson principal. "Everyone is
encouraged to participate. It all came about this fall as part of a
reading goal set by our Action Research Team."

The research team, led by teacher Heather Feuerhelm, will evaluate
the reading time throughout the school year and collect data on the
results.

"This is different from a regular class because you just sit back and
read," said one student. "It's fun and it's interesting."
