Hi, Paula--I know that answer about AASL. Director Julie Walkler, at their request, set up focus groups of librarians who gave a lot of input (we WERE invited to the "table"). Then at ALA in Toronto, the agenda at Affiliate Assembly (reps from almost all state orgranizations) was shoved aside so that we could study the draft and craft a strong statement from AASL which was sent in before the quickly approaching deadline. Then the reps from the states went back to THEIR organizations and as many as possible (most) worked with their boards to write a response and get it in before that deadline (which at that point was a few weeks). I know that the New York affiliate, SLMS/NYLA, went back with an outline that was sent to everyone on the Board and to many of our affiliates. Our technology chair, Bernie Tomasso, shepharded it so that it was sent in on time. Gee, we used technology to do that--listservs and e-mail! There was lots of input like AASL's, SLMS/NYLA's and yours; it was apparently ignored by the writers and the final version was approved with the lack of mention of library media specialists being not "noticed." Are we off their radar screen? Apparently! Can you and others (LM_NET as a community?) send feedback to the plan now? Yes. Can we get involved as writers or reviewers at the state level? Yes. Can we be sure that we are on the Technology Committees in our school? Yes. The first meeting of ours to react to this plan was held on Tuesday night and all the district's librarians were there and we will be sure that libraries are not left out of our plan. I was on the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards Library Media Standards writing committee and we went through two professional writers to get standards that passed our scrutiny. The second was an English teacher and thus was able to grasp the values and contributions of the unique profession that we are. I've thought long and hard about how this happened with the tech plan and the National Board experience leads me to believe that the writers ignored our input and the approving body didn't even notice. Disheartening? Yup. A challenge? Oh, yes. Throw in the towel? Not on your life. Send in feedback as individuals, get your local and state organizations to send in feedback and then move forward by getting involved on the state and local level. We should be harder to ignore locally. Feedback?
