Pardon me if this has already made the rounds... I have a new AP who
wants to update, organize, and manage a book room in which multiple
copies of leveled titles are stored for use by Reading Recovery, ESOL,
and early literacy teachers. Teachers currently go into the room and
(on the honor system) write down what they've taken and then scratch
out the entry when the books are returned. Our AP is buying new
materials and wants to get a better handle on managing the inventory
to make sure we can keep track of everything. At first, she suggested
they be cataloged and barcoded like library materials but I
discouraged this since the book room is nowhere near the library and I
would have no way of knowing to whom and when materials left the room
- it would also add hours of time to my inventory procedure by having
to physically scan multiple copies of the same book. Are any of you in
a school with such a book room? If so, how are the materials
inventoried and tracked? If not, do you have any ideas on a relatively
simple way to manage the collection? TIA! susan
