Dear Patty,

In response to your question about reading aloud, does it positively
impact students? My answer to your question is YES!!!

I am a 4th grade teacher and a school library media specialist graduate
student. I read aloud to my fourth graders DAILY and it does help them. By
reading aloud to them daily they get exposed to literature that they would
not normally be exposed to (I always read above grade level literature to
them, but appropriate material), and it also helps them because by reading
aloud I am modeling what a fluent reader sounds like, a skill that every
reader and non-reader strives for.

I will say that I do read grade level books to them during reading time,
when I have a lesson planned around a certain book. Read Aloud time is
different in my classroom. It is quiet time and that is when I read the
above grade level literature to them, usually novels.
