Dear LM_NET,

I WOULD NOT allow exceptions for homework or any other activity during SSR
or DEAR.
There is TONS of research that concludes that reading is powerful (Trelease
and Krashen)
There is no research to conclude that doing homework in school is beneficial
in any way
This is focused quiet time. It's not an easy thing to get used to for some
of us active folk
We need practice

We are enabling some students the opportunity to actually sit and read a
book.
You will observe those children who are not comforable with this as they
are easily distracted.
It is my hope to increase the 'sit time' over time.
I am certain that students will begin to look forward to this reading time.

I will provide guidance and avoid all punishment.
This needs to become and remain a pleasurable experience.

Up front get the kids excited that they are going to begin something new.

Assure them that you understand that it is not easy for some of us to sit
quiet for a length of time.
Do it in such a way that your students will agree to participate in the program.

The ones that express a negative attitude are probably the ones that need
it most.
MOST IMPORTANT: The students should be privy to all the guidelines ahead
of time.

Each new day, together we will establilsh the sit time based on current
circumstance.
Remind students there will be no getting up so they have to make sure they
have a book
and have used the facilities if necessary.

GUIDELINES FOR STUDENTS
Be prepared to sit at designated time
Have a book in hand or the leader will give you a book
If you are the end of that book, make sure you have another book on hand
Make sure you use the facilities before the sit time begins

There will be no talking
No getting up to get another book
No getting up to use the facilities

GUIDELINES FOR THE LEADER:
The students will all be facing the leader (so the leader can observe and
monitor student progress)
The leader will also DROP EVERYTHING AND READ !!!
Great Illustrated Classics are on hand for Grade 3 and up
Reading materials readily available for the leader to distribute if necessary
The leader will have tissues and a waste basket nearby

Good luck
