1. While at a K-5 school I re-worked an old book called _The "Now"
Library_ which had a system using numbered task cards & worksheets. I
brought in a third of a class in each week, (3rd-5th grade,) & they
worked at their own pace through the lessons. It really helped me see
individuals' skills.

2.I have about 6 stations at a time set up in my library. At the moment,
they're as follows: dress-up table, I Spy books, folktale puzzles,
folktale pictures, and listening center. The forty minutes I have with
kindergarten and first grade classes must include book selection, and as
we all know, not all the books come back every time. So the stations
started out to be something for kids who weren't checking out books, but
they've evolved to be learning stations that support my instruction.
For example, this month's unit for kindergarten was on folktale versions
of Red Riding Hood. The dress-up table has cloaks, wolf ears and tail,
a pair of fairy wings, etc. The puzzles table this month has a
Jack-in-the-Beanstalk puzzle, a Goldilocks puzzle, etc. (And, I
confess, a dinosaur puzzle, because some of the boys can't live without
it...) The pictures table has blank paper, coloring sheets, crayons,
and stencils. Next month, we'll have the puppet theater instead of the
dress-up table, a different story at the listening center, etc.

In my story corner, I have a "pocket" for each center, with six long
"tickets" in each pocket. Each "ticket" is printed with the name and a
picture representing the center. They take a ticket and go to the
center, where they put it into a can with a matching picture. That way,
I don't have twenty kids all wanting to play dress-up.

This has worked very well for me. I think every year I refine the
system and come up with better centers.

3. I don't know if this is what you're thinking of, but when we do skills
we set up stations at which the kids have to do various things. For
instance, when we do reference skills, the kids will have to use three
different sources to complete their exercise. We set up stations for each
source, atlases in one place, Guiness CD's in another, etc., and the kids
move from station to station doing one thing in each. It works well, and
helps keep the kids more engaged in what they're doing, as they have to be
more active.

4. Attached is a one-page summary I typed up for presentation to my principal one
year, explaining how they work. I went to a workshop led by a libarian who did this
and it was wonderful! My dream is to come up with centers for all grade levels that
go with the elementary curriculum -- ones that can be repeated from year to year. I
think it's a wonderful idea! <<Learning Centers in the Library.doc>>
