We work in LMC (18 computers and about 20 seats) and schools of comparable
size and environment (rural, MS and HS, 360 students). the media center is a
very, very busy place. we have reservation sheets for classes (some for
computers, othrs for the study/reading area) and other ones for individual
students (some of them might be coming from study hall). Classes come with the
teacher or Aide and have priority over individual students. S.H. is usually in
another classroom, but it happens that they come with the SH teacher, using
the same reservation system. There is a good collaborative spirit between
teachers, they trade or share spots and schedule.

Individual S.H. students follow the same rules as other individual students:
they need to sign up for a time and spot (computer, or study area) before
classes start in the morning, and they can reserve only for the same day they
are signing up (no sign-up days in advance, no multiple sign-up). We limit to
five students at a time. They need a pass to check in, and once they are in
the LMC, they stay there for the entire block period (there are exceptions, of
course: b-room and other emergencies. having forgotten study material in your
locker is not one of them). They also need to be working on a specific project
(teacher usually writes the topic on the pass). If they happen to just surf
the net or socialize, usually a firm and friendly warning is enough to get
them back on track. If not, they are sent back to where they came from.

The rules are clear, we do occasional exceptions (probably every day) as the
law is made for man and not man for the law, so the LMC is a busy but
relatively relaxed, orderly place.
