When I read about Sony's new method of "protecting" their copyright, it sent
a chill down my spine. First of all, let me say that I do not ever condone
piracy or illegal copying of materials. But the thought that I could
unwittingly purchase an innocuous music cd and have some type of spyware or
malware installed on my computer without my knowledge or permission is truly
frightening. I have had to do a complete hard recovery on my computer
before because of a particularly malicious spyware, and I lost everything!
I still don't know where I was hijacked, and I never operate without
Internet Security, including anti-spyware, anti-adware, anti-virus, etc.

If Sony clearly advertised exactly what the ramifications were, that's one
thing--but they didn't because they knew it would diminish profits. What
this does for me is to make me question anything from Sony in the future,
even though I know other companies could do this too. Our computers are so
integral to our lives--personal and professional--that this type of
intrusion is absolutely inexcuseable. It brings to mind echoes of Big
Brother, not the government kind in this situation, but the huge
corporation--what information is being recorded and what is being done with
it?

I have to believe that if they simply wanted to keep unauthorized copying
from occurring, they could come up with a way that involves the cd itself
not playing correctly, period.
