I too "fill out" my schedule after it has been given to me and some of my tasks include laminating, AR and Patron maintenance, weeding, cataloging, materials repairs, technology maintenance, pacing support, periodical maintenance, resource research and evaluation and of course planning. Then I send a copy to each faculty member. It is all about perception. Angela Wilcox I E Johnson Elem. My schedule is fixed for PK-3, fixed checkout & flexible for 4-5 and flexible for 6. When you look at my "schedule" it appears there are lots of empty "free" spaces. I was recently asked by my campus administrators to "fill in" all those empty spaces because the district is looking for areas to cut (and librarians were suggested LAST year) - so I got creative and came up with Library Administration, Cataloging/Processing, Small Group Research, Individual Research, Teacher Support, Curriculum Support, Reading Counts Support, etc. as well as PLANNING, right on the schedule. But I also took the opportunity to remind my administrators that the library door is NEVER closed unless I am out of the building, and that just because the schedule says Administration at 2:00 on Thursday afternoon, it doesn't mean I am not explaining to an individual student for the 10th time why he will never be able to find a 32 page Reading Counts book that is worth the 14 points he needs by tomorrow! -- Leah Hawkins, Librarian Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD West Hurst Elementary Hurst, TX leahleah@comcast.net "It's no use going to school unless the library is your final destination."
