I guess this just goes to show that many school programs can't function
without the paraprofessional in place. I, personally, am proud to be
a
paraprofessional albeit with a MLIS degree (Michigan employment is
awful!). To make your point to the administration, my suggestion would
be to begin tracking the time you spend doing each part of your job.
Also, check your job description to see exactly what it is you are
expected to do. Take your figures to the administration.

As for the volunteers, they probably can't do the cataloging although
at my son's middle school we had an extremely competent volunteer who
did. You could make a personal presentation to a PTA meeting showing
how the books being ordered for their children aren't getting into the
collection because of the lack of help.

One last suggestion -- my son's elementary school used seniors from a
local community senior citizens' organization to help out. After all,
many a retired librarian belongs to these organizations.

Good luck.

himself. Can he, then, be trusted with the government of others? Or
have we found angels in the form of kings to govern him? Let history
answer this question." -- Thomas Jefferson
