Syracuse University's School of Information Studies continues to seek applicants
for New York City library program

The application deadline has been extended for A Plus (A+) for New York City's
Libraries, a program led by Syracuse University's School of Information Studies and
aimed at educating new cohorts of librarians for high-need urban schools.
Interested applicants now have until November 1, 2005 to apply for the program's
spring cohort, which will begin in January, 2006.

A $999,033 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services will provide
two-thirds tuition scholarships for 40 masters-level students to participate in the
A+ program. Students will also have the opportunity to receive additional
scholarship support through the Fund for Public Schools, the 501 c3 non-profit
organization affiliated with the New York City Department of Education.

A+ will teach students to assist underserved communities by bringing together a
distinguished school media faculty and expanding on the strengths and resources of
the School of Information Studies. Courses will be taught in New York City or
through WebCT, the School of Information Studies' online teaching and learning
environment. Another cohort will be recruited to begin the program in summer 2006.

Ruth Small, School of Information Studies professor and director of the school
media program is principal investigator for the IMLS grant. In addition to Syracuse
faculty, courses will be taught by a national faculty, which includes: Ross Todd of
Rutgers University, Jackie Mancall of Drexel University, and Linda Cooper of the
Pratt Institute. The program advisor will be Pam Berger, Syracuse University
adjunct professor, educational technology/library consultant and trainer with more
than 20 years of library experience, publisher and editor of InfoSearcher, and
author of Internet for Active Learners (ALA Editions).

Taking Application for A+ Scholars
The first cohort of A+ scholars will begin their coursework in January 2006 and
then proceed through a two-year, part-time, distance learning Master of Science in
Library and Information Science program accredited by the American Library
Association and certified by New York State. Students will take coursework in
librarianship, specializing in motivating student reading, research and learning
with technology, and serving as agents of change within their libraries and their
profession. In the PLUS program, all fieldwork and practicum experiences occur in
urban school library settings.

The A+ program is multi-faceted, infusing a variety of special activities into the
academic program, including:
* a Webcast lecture series featuring guest speakers on relevant issues affecting
high-need urban schools
* leading E*LIT (Enriching Literacy through Information Technology) program that
involves children in projects that combine literacy and technology skills
* workshops for enrichment on special topics with follow-up online synchronous and
asynchronous discussions
* participation in an online practicum seminar that addresses issues relevant to
serving children in high-need urban schools
* mentoring program pairing PLUS scholars with practitioner mentors from New York
City schools
* opportunities to work on relevant projects through Syracuse University's Center
for Digital Literacy and the Information Institute of Syracuse
* a "buddy" system that pairs PLUS scholars in New York City with other S.U. school
media students (e.g., PLUS-Upstate students)to share experiences and ideas
* opportunities to contribute to nationwide projects such as "S.O.S. for
Information Literacy," a multimedia, Web-based database of information literacy
lesson plans and to "REACH for the STARS: Supporting & Teaching At- Risk Students,"
a Web site of resources for high needs schools.
