I, too, tend to put individual items with others of the same subject rather than keeping the whole series or set together. However, Library of Congress does catalog sets together, as I learned in cataloging class. If I remember correctly, they also include the single volume classification number in case a library wants to use that instead of the series number. So I believe both options are correct and you can choose the one that works best for your library.
