Practically speaking, given that you may have little control over what happens in the specific situation in the original post, one thing to consider would be to talk w/ your principal about dealing with overdue and lost/damaged books. Can you get a liason at the private school to handle those issues? Can you get the private school to agree to cover losses or are you going to be responsible for squeezing parents whose students don't even attend your school? Are we talking about frequent checkout, like weekly, for the entire private school student body or supplementing what they have in their collection periodically? If you are going to have weekly checkout than in reality that is going to decrease service to the students in your school unless your library is very atypical in its overabundance of resources. If students have to wait 6 weeks instead of 3 to get the new Lemony Snicket or Harry Potter or Guinness book, then that is somewhat of a problem when it comes to meeting your patrons' needs. I think that most of us wouldn't have a problem w/ some usage of the school library by a private school, the question is how much is too much? When does this 'helping' reach the level of causing a negative impact to our students and teachers? Or do we simply accept the situation and include the students/teachers at the private school as part of our pool of patrons? The varied views on this topic have been interesting.
