I work at a school that serves students with behavioral/emotional
impairments, so hopefully I can help you:)

Look at:

Joey Pigza series (loses control, swallowed the key) by Jack Gantos
Hank Zipzer series by Henry Winkler
Holes by Louis Sachar (would be great to then watch the movie to
compare the two)

These might be of interest, too (more for young adults, but my 6th
graders love them)
Slam by Walter Dean Myers
Durango Street by Frank Bonham

Also, I am a BIG FAN of books on tape - this will help those with low
reading levels. Listening Library has a great brochure available
(http://www.randomhouse.com/audio/listeninglibrary/parents/images/liter
acy_brochure.pdf).

Hope that helps:)
