I am surprised more people haven't challenged The Amber Spyglass trilogy. I have read all 3 and don't think they belong below high school. They deal with very difficult philosophical and religious issues that very, very few middle school students are ready to handle on their own. I am a lapsed Unitarian who in childhood was raised Southern Baptist so I have seen and believed on both ends of the spectrum. Certainly you want to defend the process but I think the people involved need to read the books themselves.
