I must give a big THANKS to all who took the time to email me about their lists of genres. I was asked (by quite a few people) to share the information I received. I must especially thank Robert Joyce, who anticipated my next move and searched the LM-NET archives as well as his own emails and sent me all kinds of information on teaching genres. I have collected it, and if anyone is interested in that topic, please email me off list and I will send you the information. You are far too kind, Robert! Here, meanwhile, is the information on genres of literature: I would speak of genres like poetry, short story, novel, essay, etc And Novel sug-genres like SF, fantasy, adventure, etc. My guess is that a definitive list will be impossible.:-) --- I have taught a basic list with my 5/6th grade Reading teacher for many years. It is a list that works for us, 8 genres. However, I would encourage you to develop a method that suits you and your school. I have many, many new faculty this year, so I'm really making changes about what and when I introduce. I will not teach this list in total this year, but here is the list I have used for years. Realistic fiction Historical fiction Science fiction Fantasy fiction Poetry Information books Folklore Biography/Autobiography --- Science fiction, horror, mysteries, children's literature, romance, comic studies, the fantastic, best sellers, the occult, westerns, oral literature to name a few. --- I'm not sure there is a definitive list, however, Lynch-Brown & Tomlinson have a great book, Essentials of Children's Literature, that I highly recommend. They define the following categories: Poetry & Plays Picture Books Traditional Literature (myths; legends & tall tales; folktales; fables; religious stories) Modern Fantasy (modern folktales; animal fantasy; personified toys & objects; a few more subcategories) Realistic Fiction (subcategories like families, peers, animals, sports, etc.) Historical Fiction Nonfiction Horning's From Cover to Cover has much broader categories: Nonfiction; Traditional Literature; Poetry, Verse, Rhymes, & Songs; Picture Books; Easy Readers & Transitional Books; Fiction. She goes into great detail on the various subtypes of Traditional Literature, but doesn't do the same for Fiction. --- I am not sure there is a definitive list of genres. We teach the kids about Mysteries, Historical Fiction, Fantasy, Romance, and we have one teacher who has a category called Realistic Fiction which includes only modern fiction about things that could happen, but not to be confused with Historical Fiction. I have to admit that one was confusing to me . . . (not sure what that says about me). There is also a little known, but highly satisfying genre specific to Hispanic literature called "Magical Realism", which includes literature that seems realistic, but in a few instances things happen that really could not in our world. "Como Agua Para Chocolate" (Like Water for Chocolate) and the Isabel Allende books "Forest of the Pygmies" and "Kingdom of the Golden Dragon" are examples of this type. --- This is a good topic - recently at a workshop for librarians, others thought Wordless books was a genre. Mine have been Mystery, Fantasy, Science Fiction, Realistic, Historical Fiction. Our classroom teachers in Literacy classes have been using ones like poetry, biography, folktales. --- Here's what I use in elementary folklore fairy tales realistic fiction historical fiction biography information (nonfiction) science fiction/fantasy I make my own posters with publisher. I use definitions from Charlotte Huck's children's lit book. --- Hi, I googled genres and found several websites, one of which listed several and had a link to see more information so I just thought I'd post the link. They did mention that the one thing about genres is that not everyone agrees. Hope the link helps. http://www.sevenoaks.wa.edu.au/linkpage/reading/read4.html --- I've already had a 4th grade team email me about a genre lesson. They are going to teach from the perspective of author's purpose. The genre part will belong to me. I'm not sure exactly how it will work or what they mean by author's purpose. We are going to come up with the genres they want to use. Like you I am running into different lists. --- I would use these listings as a start. Hope this will be helpful. Thanks so much. http://www.todaysteacher.com/LiteratureGenreList.htm http://dir.yahoo.com/Arts/Humanities/Literature/Genres/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Literary_genre http://dmoz.org/Arts/Literature/Genres/ http://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/rl/ll/litrlgenres.asp http://www.sevenoaks.wa.edu.au/linkpage/reading/read4.html http://www.google.com/Top/Arts/Literature/Genres/ --- After much debating, several years ago, I came up with the info on my genres web page. We do a yearlong reading program and one of our themes is to do a different genre each month. Hope my web page helps. We are recycling the theme this year, so I'll be updating all the links this year. My reading page is http://www.websterschools.org/classrooms/ state_library/reading.html and my genres page is http://www.websterschools.org/classrooms/ state_library/genres.html ~Marie Ferner --- Hi. I teach in a K-2 so we are a little limited, but I do a genre unit with 2nd grade starting with Biographies in Jan (Black History Month), then Realistic Fiction, Historical Fiction, Mysteries, Fantasy, Poetry (in April), Science Fiction (good timing b/c by then many are ready for the mystery chapter books series), and Folklore (which I focus on in first grade). Usually its about 2 weeks/genre. --- google "genres of literature" for some already completed definitions or any good teacher's store has books in the reading section or realistic fiction (yes it could happen) historical fiction (past time, place, or person) Mystery (solve problem) science fiction (based on science) fantasy/ fairytale/folktale (not likely to happen, future, other worlds, romance novels,/ explains unusual events or has moral or lesson) suspense (thrillers, Harry Potters, Twiilight Zone, etc.) non-fiction (facts) poetry (emotions, feelings in specific formats) biographies (story of someone's life events) humor (can be true or imagined ) Animal stories (some true some imagined) --- Hi, Janis............ Our CA Dept of Ed has a great website of Recommended Literature. It also includes concise definitions of various Literary Genres. Here's the web address: http://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/rl/ll/ --- I have yet to find a definitive list also, but I came up with the following: Fantasy, Mystery, Horror, Realistic Fiction, Historical Fiction, and Science Fiction. There is sometimes confusion because I've seen Humor as a genre. But I tell my kids that humor can be found in every genre. I've also seen subjects used as genres (for example, Sports or Animals) But we've all read Mouse on a Motorcycle by Beverly Cleary and that is a fantasy. Generally, when an animal behaves like a person or dresses like a person, I would label that book a fantasy. It gets real tricky labeling certain books: Magic Tree House (Fantasy or Hiistorical Fiction?). I let my kids know that certain books are more than one particular genre. I hope this helps! --- Below is a link to a genre website I am currently making. It is not complete yet, but may give you an idea of different types of genres I see being used and taught. http://students.lisp.wayne.edu/~ax3025/genre/ Good luck. Sherry Martin --- I don't think you will get any definitive answers - and most teachers also add/introduce genres by grade level because some are too mature for their students. For example, science fiction/science fantasy (requires higher level thinking & imagination), horror (although I know a kindergarten teacher who encourages the reading of "Goosebumps". . . - not at my school though!) and so on. I find that many students do not have a real concept of time (as in centuries gone by*) until 5th grade and after. For this reason, historical fiction may not be of interest to those students, although there are good primary level books (like some of the Magic Treehouse titles, for example) to begin the foundation. I was going to work with a 5th grade class on genre and asked the teacher which areas she would like me to cover. She said the district has no set specifics - she was using the list I had given her the year before. So I will pass on to you the (California) state education website which has an in-depth list and an annotated list of genre. Feel free to share this wonderful resource. http://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/rl/ll/ Click on the third link which is Literary Genres. You will notice that the list is in two sections: "All Fiction" and "All Nonfiction" - but this will need explanation to those who know their Dewey "nonfiction" arrangement vs. fiction shelves as most of us shelve Folklore, short story collections, poetry, etc. in with the "nonfiction." --- I don't know if this is exactly what you're looking for, but it list the genre of many items and may help.
