I do agree with Jan that there might be some privacy issues involved. However, in my school's experience privacy was not an issue. I was against labeling the books with AR levels, but my students requested it. I turned it into a club; some of the students who were so eager to have the stickers spent their lunch times with me and put the stickers on the books. The kids find the information very helpful when choosing what to read. Sometimes, they are required to pick a book within their reading range; and, just like adults, sometimes they want a challenge, and sometimes they want a skinny little easy book to read on the bus. Just b/c a book has a brown 4th level sticker on it doesn't mean the person holding that book couldn't read a 6th level. That said, there are kids who feel they have to borrow a giant book to carry around. Robin Shtulman, Librarian Erving Elementary School 28 Northfield Rd.
