One of the school districts with which I consult is reviewing its policy on
Student Library Circulation Records. Currently the language of the policy is
generic and probably full of loopholes. It includes a final clause stating
something to the effect that the district superintendent and the district
teacher librarian(s) should develop administrative regulations regarding when
and how the teacher librarian should approve requests to access student records.
I have the AASL Position statement on the confidentiality of library records in
hand, as well as p. 155 from Information Power on confidentiality of library
records, but if anyone has a sample they are willing to share of the steps or
flow-chart that provide guidance to determining when access might be granted, it
would be great help. Please respond off list, and if there are those interested
in a Hit, I will make whatever follow-up I can. Many thanks!
