Many of these sites have a site to report suspect email and they do try (and 
sometimes succeed) to track them down.  eBay is spoof at ebay dot com and 
paypal is spoof at paypal.com.  Many others have the same email address and 
I frequently forward the emails to their spoof email address and then 
delete.  There is also a free download called beping that will let you ping 
the isp address.  Look under the email properties and get the isp address 
and copy and paste it into beping and it will trace it if it is still up and 
running by the time you get the email.  I use beping quite a bit also.
