Although I am certified to teach Pre-K through 6th grade, I much prefer to be
a school library media specialist! I hear all the time about how I have the
best job in the school...from teachers and students! I love being able to
teach different grades and different students constantly...it's like being a
grandma...you can love them and then send them back to their teachers...especially
nice if a group is having a rough day. I have been an SLMS in an elementary
school and am now an SLMS in a high school, and I have loved both positions!
The freedom to move about the school is invigorating...I can visit Biology
classes, Global, etc. to get a good feel for what the students are learning, so
that I can put some books on display that would be useful and interesting to
them...and the kids love when I come to one of their classes and take notes
right with them...teachers have been wonderful about it also,,,they love the extra
adult in the room...a great way to build relationships with the teachers and
students and build collaborative bridges. Also, SLMSs are safe to
students...often students come to me to talk about their teen concerns of home,
school,
and relationships...my office and library have become a hangout for teachers
and students. I DO feel like a have the best job in the school, because I love
my job. I would never choose going back into the classroom over being in the
library...no regrets!

I hope you look forward to a new experience and challenge...with your
teaching and classroom experience, you will be a fantastic SLMS if you allow
yourself
the opportunity. Ultimately, you know the old saying...you have to follow
your heart! Good luck, and have fun with this!
