I've always been a toucher, it's the mom in me, I guess. I touch arms and shoulders usually just to establish contact. When a student isn't comfortable with the touch I back off and engage them in conversation. I do get to see students outside of the library because I've always coached, driven buses and usually live in the community where I work. It's always fun to see the kids at a store and smile or talk to them. I had an ongoing joke with one of them at my last school where I'd see him in the grocery store and go up and ask him why his shirt wasn't tucked in. The look on his face was priceless and we'd laugh about it, I must of gotten him 5 times in a month! When I'm out coaching, I make sure I listen to the conversations about school work and when I can help with info, I mention it to them or suggest they come and see me for help. I field questions all the time on the fields, too, about where to find information. Needless to say, I love my job!
