Just a note to keep things in order and not to confuse those who are just beginning the process of cataloging / taking classes. The indicators on the 082 Dewey number in the MARC record identify the TYPE of edition and the SOURCE of the cataloging. My use of the term "indicators" for the call numbers should actually be referred to as PREFIXES. (the FIC, DVD, etc.) The subfield in the MARC record that would show the shelf number information regarding the call number would be in the 852 tag. This is where I plan to update some of the information in our collection---because that is also incorrect. Thanks to Carol Simpson for reminding me that there are several students monitoring LM_NET who will refer to our conversation as "the final word" on a subject. My terms are confusing (although this was the reason I put "quotations" around the term)----- but if your trying to figure all of this out, please refer to your cataloging texts and AACR2 for the correct standards. The prefixes are NOT indicators per MARC standards. Have a wonderfully "organized" weekend!! :> ~Shonda Shonda Brisco, MLIS US / Technology Librarian 4200 Country Day Lane Fort Worth Country Day School Fort Worth, TX 817.732.7718 ext. 339 "Start by doing what is necessary, then what is possible and suddenly you are doing the impossible." ~St. Francis of Assisi sbrisco@fwcds.org http://www.fwcds.org/campus/libraries/default.asp -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
