No, not at all. One more example of our "dumbed down" society. Billy Budd is required reading here, thank God. I say that but also admitting I do not like Melville and never have. I discovered years ago I do not like any books about the sea...so I don't enjoy Conrad either. I think I must have drowned in Atlantis during a previous life or something. We do require a lot of required reading of the "classics" here as well as contemporary works by Angelou, Morrison, Albom, etc. One senior boy told me Friday that he had fallen in love with Hawthorn's short stories and checked out 3 collections. Makes my heart jump when I hear students become excited about reading. When I was teaching Education at the undergraduate level I noticed a trend about many future teachers. Their background was sorely inadequate and had enough holes to sink them. As a certified teacher of English I was appalled that they did not know the basics in American Literature, much less European, Latino, etc. Right now as I write this I have 7 boys in my office sitting at a table debating the symbolism in "A Doll's House." Ah the joys of youth. Not much time left--- as we say around here -- "June be soon!" Wait! Don't Tell Me" show on Saturday, May 6, when a high school English teacher from Chicago got to compete. One of the celebrity panel asked her if Billy Budd is still taught in high school English departments and she answered, "No, it isn't, whatever that is," or words to that effect. Granted, I have never read that Melville novel but I at least know what it is! Needless to say that I cringed and wished that she had not identified herself as an English teacher! So, am I over reacting?
