If you're thinking of heading off to the Public library sphere, an MLS may 
not be needed.  NJ has a "Professional Librarian Certificate", which is 
required by many public libraries for professional level jobs. The 
requirements are for ***either*** an MLS from an ALA accredited program, 
or a Masters level degree in Library science from an approved program at a 
state college (aka the former teachers colleges).  There is another route 
for people who have library degrees earned outside the US or Canada. 

So, see if your state offers a similar certification, and get it. Then you 
have that to offer, even out of state.
