Here is what I do for lost books. I do not charge late fees.
Students have three choices.
Firstly, the student can pay for the book. When the book shows up in good shape,
as most do within a few days of payment, we refund the payment.
Secondly, the student may be able to bring in books that are double the price of
the lost books. I say double because, I am essentially trading for a used book and
will not pay cover for a used book, plus we have some processing to do on any trade
we make. The books must be titles that will enhance the collection and in near
perfect shape. When the lost book shows up, we do not return the books, they
become a donation.
Thirdly, and only one time in their school career, the student may be able to work
off the lost book. I have them write up a contract and they work one class period
for each dollar. The book must be worked off before the end of the year. When the
book shows up, the students contract is void.
Book damage is assessed case by case and is always a dollar amount to be paid by
cash or check.
