I read that article that Jeff wrote and it reninforced what I already was thinking.
I have about 4 of the units right now and expect to order about 60 more for next
school year. I have purchased the earbuds from Follett and do not circulate
earbuds with the Playaways but rather sell them at the circ desk for $1 in a
ziplock bag that is labeled with the students name. They can use these earbuds for
our computers and music keyboards as well or they can use their own from their
ipods or other devices. If we find the earbuds laying around we toss them out but
if they are in the labled ziplock bag we return them to the owner. We have
attached the barcode to the unit itself and plan to check it out with two
rechargeable batteries that must be returned with the unit. The LD students that
have been testing them for me love them! They especially love the feature of being
able to slow down the audio so that they can follow along in a hard copy of the
book. They have been able to pass the AR quiz on the book when they used the
Playaway in this way. Also, they love the "cool" factor. The Playaway is small
enough to fit in a pants pocket and who knows if they are listening to Beyonce or a
book. Am I worried about the units being stolen, damaged or lost...yes....but if
it helps my at risk readers to love books it is totally worth the investment.

If you happen to subscribe to School Library Journal, Joanna, I reviewed
Playaways in this month's test drive column.

While I don't have time for a full redux, I liked them and think they're
the most sensible way to deliver audiobooks in many school settings. The
catalog decent and growing. Frankly, I have yet to see any source that
comes close being satisfying in terms of offering up newer titles for
tweens and teens, and they're as good or better than most alternatives
I've had the chance to explore.

Has anyone else in LM_NETland found a one-stop shop for k-12 audiobooks?

Subject: [LM_NET] TAR: Follett Playaways

Hello everyone,
I would like to know if anyone out there has been using Follett's new
audiobook system - Playaways. My principal is interested and I would
love some feedback from people using them. Are they reliable? How is
the selection of audiobooks? Are they cost effective? If anyone is
using them I would love comments.
Thanks,
