Thanks to all who sent their letters of interest AND their advice!
Here are some of the responses I received. I've attached copies of the sample
letters that were sent to me. I changed names, addresses & phone numbers to
"protect the innocent" !!!!!
Thanks again!

Julie, I was in the same position as you last year. I had no idea what to write.
I have attached my letter of interest. I asked my prinicipal at the time what to
write and she said just to include that I was interested and my experience. The
letter of interest is to just let them know you are interested for the interview.
After that they, could talk to your administrator and look at your resume (which I
took to the interview). By the way, I got the job.

Here are the job tips we post to our state association's Web page:

And a sample letter of interest:

When I taught the kids about letters of inquiry, I told them they
should highlight their qualifications for the job and should ask for
a specific answer to the letter. It should never be longer than one
page. (Resume one page but if necessary two - but never more than two
pages long.) I've attached a blocked out version of the letter I sent
to the school where I am currently working so it must have been OK.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It should be tailored specifically to that position. In addition, if you get a
chance to visit the facility, you can mention that. This is a cover letter for a
litrary where I had an interview, but didn't get the job. They hired someone with
more experience. I ended up getting a job a few months later in Idaho.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I had to write a similar letter when I applied for my library
position. I just addressed it to the personnel director, stated my name and
current position. I said I wanted to apply for the open position. I included
the number of years and positions I had held in the district and stated my
qualifications for the job I was applying for.
That was it. It was about 4 sentences long.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think a letter of interest is similar to a cover letter. You are just
expressing your interest in the open position and reminding your district of
your capabilities regarding being able to fill that position. I've copied in
my cover letter from several years ago when I applied for my present
position. You would change some things / eliminate some / add some to suit
your purposes.
