Thanks, Alma for bringing up a very important point. Due to budget
constraints around the country we are losing librarian positions and the
children in public schools are the losers. Without qualified library media
specialists actually working in the schools rather than working as
administrators for many schools, library skills, teacher-librarian
collaboration, and actually, good, curriculum-supporting library collections
will be non-existent. People, like myself, who still have jobs cannot be
content to just "be happy" that we are employed. We really owe it to the
children to be sure that our colleagues who are being laid off,... are
placed in some of the positions which we are covering so that all school
librarians and libraries are able to be effective. Contacting legislators
at the state and national level is a must. We cannot just feel comfortable
about this and say nothing. You can go to the NEA site and contact your
legislators very easily. Also, encourage your colleagues in education to do
the same.
