If your students haven't discovered Rick Riordan's "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" series: The Lightning Thief, The Sea of Monsters, and The Titan's Curse, introduce them to a new hero. I gave The Lightning Thief to a sixth grade boy who was looking for something new to read. He loved it. When I gave him the second book, he was standing in the middle of the library with both books in his hands. He was book talking the book to his friends. (and did a better job than I could have done) Suddenly, I had four sixth grade boys fighting over a book that wasn't sports or a comic book. It was a book based on Greek Mythology. I gave my 10 year old nephew The Lightning Thief. Two days later, he called me and said, "The cover says Book 1. If there is a Book 2, I need it today!" I get so excited and have to share my small victories over video games, TV, and sports! Joanne R.
