These books are also very popular at the HS level - I think the HS kids
get some of the more sly humor!

I must agree with Joanne on this one! Rich Riordan's "Percy Jackson"
series IS one series that most elementary students LOVE! His book,
"The Lightning Thief" was on our Bluebonnet List this past year and I
finally purchased six copies of the book (rather than just the normal
three copies) because of the requests! At the end of the school year,
two copies had to be discarded because they had been worn....and the
circulation records showed that they had been out more than any of the
other titles on the list.

During the last week of school, I hosted a bookfair and sold out of
"The Lightning Thief" (they wanted their own copies to read--- or had
not read it yet--- and wanted to read it over the summer)....AND those
who had started the series found the second book there at the bookfair
to purchase (The Sea of Monsters)! I reordered those copies and sold
most of them (our bookfair was only three days in length, so my
students were limited in their visits). However, the series was on
the students' "YOU MUST BUY" list of requests for next year! What a
great way to introduce Greek Mythology as a teacher-librarian
collaboration project!

Rick Riordan is also a Texan (from San Antonio) and I've heard that he
has a great program (although his calendar is full for the upcoming
school year, you can possibly schedule him for 2008-2009 beginning in
January 2008)....if you're interested. A list of schools that he has
visited is available here:

about half-way to see the list)
