Call for Nominations for International Copyright Advocates

The ALA Office for Information Technology (OITP) and the Library
Copyright Alliance (http://www.librarycopyrightalliance.org/
<http://www.librarycopyrightalliance.org/> ) is seeking a few librarians
interested in advocating for libraries at international copyright
meetings. In an attempt to build expertise and broaden our ability to
represent libraries in international forums, OITP has secured funds to
support a pilot program to prepare librarians for international
copyright advocacy at forums such as the World Intellectual Property
Organization (WIPO), the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS)
and the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA).

Interested librarians must be able to devote approximately four weeks a
year to attend international meetings, including preparation for and
post analysis of the meeting. We are looking for librarians that can
make at least a 3-year commitment to the program. A letter from your
institution authorizing this time commitment must be received along with
your application in order to be considered. A grant from the John D. and
Katherine T. MacArthur Foundation will partially fund travel expenses
during the first year. Funding for the second and third year is
contingent on possible upcoming foundation grants.

Other requirements:

Extensive knowledge of U.S. copyright law

Demonstrated ability to advocate for libraries or strong
willingness to learn

            Experience working with coalitions

            ALA membership

Release time to attend one day training in Washington, DC

Release time to participate in a monthly conference call
with the Library Copyright Alliance (LCA)

Knowledge of international copyright law is desired.

To be considered, submit a letter expressing your interest along with a
letter from your institution authorizing your participation. In the
letter, include information that would support your candidacy such as
experience working in coalitions, previous library advocacy experience
and knowledge of the copyright law.

Send your letter or any questions you have to Rick Weingarten via email
at rweingarten@alawash.org <mailto:rweingarten@alawash.org> . Deadline
for applications is August 31, 2007.
