Wow! Really? Really? Policing Dewey? Then our city's biography section should be locked down. I decided to follow the city's local practice, so that my students can feel comfortable there as well. Even if you were speaking in hyperbole, this sounds like another example of trying enact a law that can not be policed. Biographies are 920 and 921 in DDC with the three letters of the person last name. If we use a system that work world wide for a few decades now, then librarians or library people will not confuse themselves or their patrons with systems that they create. I almost feel that library associations should fine those who create these practices, like doctors and lawyers who get sued for malpractices. -----Original Message----- From: School Library Media & Network Communications [mailto:LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU] On Behalf Of Frederick Muller Sent: Tuesday, June 12, 2007 8:05 AM To: LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU Subject: BIO Spine labels My biography section has always driven me crazy with large blocks of books in a confusing order. Several years ago I changed my spine labels to BIO AAAAA (5 letters of last name of Biographee instead of three) But when I do inventory, there are still large groups mixed up for example (JACKS, WASH, and ADAMS) I now I have changed my spine label policy to: BIO AAAAA (5 letters of last name of Biographee) AAA (3 letters of first name of Biographee) This will eliminate most of the problems (except for BUSH - which I can deal with) BEFORE YOU WRITE BACK... .I just throw this out as an idea. I know it is not standard but I think it will work for my situation. I had considered doing the last line with the author's name as other libraries do, but that still would not put the books in an order that makes sense. Also, I do not have time to change all my spine labels. I will first change them in the computer and then when I do inventory, the books will be in order.
