I have some in-district colleagues I'd like to fine for "creative cataloging." I
think it's a pride thing - "I made things more accessible than Dewey" or something
silly like that. Or they have nothing better to do with their time.

The other thing I'd fine people for is book baskets. They drive me crazy! What
makes a "good book" or an "interesting book" as opposed to an "adventure book" or a
"classic."

And "popular series" shelves, as if just teaching kids the author's names wasn't
necessary - just put the "popular" ones in a special section, the kids will find
them, eventually, because they're "popular."

And then there's the people who won't buy certain books, like Goosebumps or Captain
Underpants, because they personally don't like them.

Or for just being crabby. Turning kids off from books just by making the library a
not-fun place to be.

I would love to be a charter member of the DDC Squad. Would we get special
uniforms - small rimmed glasses on a metal bead chain (bifocal, of course),
cardigan with elbow patches and sensible shoes?

The past weeks we had the lengthy discussion about the DDC, and the
relevancy of it in modern libraries, and here is a perfect example of
what will happen if we discard Dewey or any other system.
I know many of us tweak the classification systems to our own needs. I
feel that those librarians make it just difficult for the students and
later for them, and others that come after them when they retire.
Biographies are 920 and 921 in DDC with the three letters of the person
last name. If we use a system that work world wide for a few decades
now, then librarians or library people will not confuse themselves or
their patrons with systems that they create.
I almost feel that library associations should fine those who create
these practices, like doctors and lawyers who get sued for malpractices.

Subject: BIO Spine labels

My biography section has always driven me crazy with large blocks of
books
in a confusing order.

Several years ago I changed my spine labels to
  BIO
AAAAA (5 letters of last name of Biographee instead of three)

But when I do inventory, there are still large groups mixed up
for example (JACKS, WASH, and ADAMS)

I now I have changed my spine label policy to:
  BIO
AAAAA (5 letters of last name of Biographee)
AAA (3 letters of first name of Biographee)

This will eliminate most of the problems (except for BUSH - which I can
deal
with)

BEFORE YOU WRITE BACK... .I just throw this out as an idea. I know it
is
not standard but I think it will work for my situation. I had
considered
doing the last line with the author's name as other libraries do, but
that
still would not put the books in an order that makes sense.

Also, I do not have time to change all my spine labels. I will first
change
them in the computer and then when I do inventory, the books will be in
order.

Have a great summer
